Congratulations to Ms. Mary Honey for being nominated as May’s Making a Difference Employee! Ms. Honey was selected due to her remarkable work with our on campus school Transitions Learning Center. Mary is dedicated to her job and she is an inspiration to all the staff at MRC. She is a true example of our Mission Statement by showing true optimism and genuine concern for all. Mary takes time to make sure each student is focused on treatment and their education.
Q&A with Ms. Mary Honey
Q. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?
A. I wanted to work in Human Services and be a Social Worker. I wanted to save the world.
Q. What was your favorite school subject?
A. Algebra and Writing. I enjoy the ritual of Algebra and I love how it is concrete. I also love to write. I like to journal several times a week.
Q. What would you do if you were invisible for a day?
A. Spend time alone at my home and read and do jigsaw puzzles.
Q. If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be?
A. James Taylor! His music is fabulous and he seems so genuine and kind.
Q. What does it mean to you to be “making a difference”?
A. I know I am making a difference when I believe in the students and they begin to believe in themselves. Just like my sponsor did with me.
“Teaching Hope & Recovery”
Ms. Mary Honey began teaching at MRC in 1998 as our Youth Development GED Teacher. In 2009, she became the Principal/Teacher of Transitions Learning Center. In addition to her Principal duties, Ms. Honey is currently teaching Math and Science classes at our Youth Program. Mary’s favorite thing about working at MRC is recovery. She loves the hope that is in recovery and the smaller classes she is able to teach. “The gift of being there to show the kids they are worthy of recovery is wonderful.”
When she isn’t teaching or grading papers, Ms. Honey enjoys taking walks, putting together jigsaw puzzles, reading, and seeing shows at Playhouse on the Square. She is also a member of the Master Singers at Calvary Episcopal Church. “It is very difficult, but I love the challenge!” Mary has one son, Michael, who recently graduated from UT Knoxville with his Bachelors in Electrical Engineering. Mary also spends time watching her supportive significant other, Bruce, at his trombone concerts.
Mary is grateful for the support and kindness she has received from MRC’s Youth Program & Youth Development staff. She appreciates the nominations and it really warms her heart that others believe she adds to MRC.
